The National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) firmly opposes housing discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, disability, familial status, sexual orientation, gender identity, and national origin. These principles are at the core of NAR's Code of Ethics, which empowers the organization to impose sanctions on members who violate any fair housing laws—including local or state laws that protect against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
NAR formally expanded its support for equal opportunity by amending the Code of Ethics in 2010 and 2013 to explicitly include sexual orientation and gender identity. Further reinforcing its commitment, on November 13, 2020, NAR's Board of Directors adopted recommendations to extend Article 10 of the Code to cover discriminatory speech and behavior even outside of real estate activities, strengthening REALTORS®’ responsibility to uphold fair housing values in all areas of life.
